HandsOn Bay Area (HOBA) strengthens communities through volunteer action and leadership development by creating opportunities for people to volunteer, learn and lead in their communities.  The organization serves as a single point of contact for volunteers, nonprofit agencies and corporations who seek the highest quality volunteer program development, management and civic engagement opportunities. Each year, 10,000 HOBA volunteers meet the needs of more than 200 community-based organizations.

HOBA coordinates and manages more than 80 direct-service projects each month through our calendar projects that are open to the community.  For volunteers, HOBA offers convenient scheduling to accommodate a range of commitment levels. HOBA's web tools give volunteers an easy to way manage their participation, create teams and learn about new opportunities. HOBA also gives volunteers opportunities to deepen their knowledge of community issues through its book clubs, film screenings and discussions. HOBA's leadership training programs give volunteers a chance to develop personally and professionally.

Additionally, for corporate clients, HOBA creates customized service projects as part of our Hands@Work (H@W) program.  Through the H@W program, HOBA designs and manages projects for corporations that want to support their employees in giving back to the communities where they work and live.  Current clients include Accenture, Cisco, Charles Schwab & Co., Gap Inc., The Home Depot and Levi Strauss & Co. 

HOBA is an affiliate of the HandsOn Network, an international alliance of more than 300 volunteer organizations working to build community through service and civic engagement.

With a position start date of October 4th 2010, HandsOn Bay Area (HOBA) is currently accepting applications for a full-time HandsOn Corps National Direct AmeriCorps member. HOBA’s AmeriCorps National Direct members dedicate one year of service strengthen the capacity of HOBA in coordination with two full-time VISTA AmeriCorps members.

AmeriCorps members serve with local and national organizations that are committed to implementing programming that addresses a myriad of critical community needs. National Direct members are engaged in direct service which focus on program implementation and volunteer engagement.

Position Purpose and Overview
Through the Project Leader Program, HandsOn Bay Area recruits and trains experienced volunteers to lead others in service. In partnership with AmeriCorps Alums, the Project Leader Coordinator AmeriCorps member will recruit, train and deploy these leaders, targeting especially the AmeriCorps Alum network in the Bay Area as a resource for new leaders. This position is part of the HandsOn Corps National Direct program through the HandsOn Network.

Position Responsibilities
VOLUNTEER

  • Support the development of group-based service learning opportunities for volunteers
  • Attend community meetings where large numbers of organizations are present
  • Assist nonprofits and public agencies with the development of high-quality team-based volunteer projects
  • Brainstorm with nonprofits on volunteer engagement best practices to better accomplish program goals
  • Support national and local days of service by coordinating service events and awareness building for MLK DAY, National AmeriCorps Week and Be the Change Day
  • Identify communities for asset-based collaboration
  • Engage community residents in the development, planning, and implementation of community projects
  • Develop and provide volunteer training and ongoing support to community volunteers
  • On-site Project Management
  • Serve as a project leader for HOBA’s Project Calendar and Hands@Work corporate days of service
  • Represent HOBA’s mission and key talking points about project to volunteers on-site
  • Communicate clearly with corporate team captains, leaders and volunteers to articulate goals of the project
  • Provide ad hoc project management to ensure that the project experience is safe, productive, and fun for the volunteers and that the project goals for the agency partner are met, including project clean-up at the end of the day.

LEAD

  • Ensure all calendar projects within region have project leaders
  • Support the development of a sustainable Project Leader recruitment and training program. This includes both online and in-person trainings.
  • Lead the coordination and implementation of trainings and gatherings for HOBA Project Leaders
  • Participate in the ongoing evaluation of the Project Leader Program
  • Mobilize and deploy volunteer leaders in support of HOBA’s ongoing managed volunteer projects and special events
  • Recruit and train AmeriCorps Alums and other community volunteers to become volunteer leaders to support ongoing volunteer mobilization
  • Support the service of Bay Area AmeriCorps Alum chapter, focusing on engaging chapter in volunteer mobilization and service project delivery
  • Organize social networking and awareness-building online to connect local service with national AmeriCorps Alum activity, leveraging national presence for local impact.

Requirements

  • Applicant must be 18 years or older
  • Interest in nonprofit work and belief in the value of community service.
  • A commitment to serving the needs of low-income and underserved communities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter
  • Computer literate, able to use common software applications and to learn new technologies
  • Ability to conduct community research in person and via the Internet
  • Experience in community organizing is desirable
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
  • Ability to provide positive supervision and mentoring for volunteers at the project site.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Professional demeanor in person and on the phone. Strong customer service skills.
  • Criminal Background check and National Sex Offender Registry Check will be conducted.

Supervision: The Program Manager will be the main supervisor for the Project Leader Coordinator. 

Terms: The AmeriCorps National Direct program requires full-time service (1,700 hours over 11 months) beginning Oct. 4.

Compensation and benefits

  • A living allowance of $17,000, paid bi-weekly, over term of 11 months
  • Loan forbearance for federally approved student loans during term of service
  • An education award of $5,350 upon completion of a full year of service
  • AmeriCorps benefits package
